The new season of Mad Men started on Sunday (July 27) on US cable and satellite channel AMC. Season 2 of the hit show appears to have taken the US by storm, with critics, fanatics and web forums describing the opening two episodes as stirring up a storm of superlatives.
Season 2 is set in 1962 two years later than S1, with lead character Don Draper attempting to balance his complicated private life, with the office politics of the Madison Avenue ad agency, Sterling Cooper, where he is partner and creative director.
The show is taking a darker turn in line with the period, one would suspect that the Cuban missile crisis will feature in the background as the 1960 Nixon/Kennedy Presidential elections did in S1.
S2 of Mad Men will air in the UK next year on BBC Four, here’s a trailer to keep fans going.
A Vanity Fair journalist commented that Mad Men is Sex and the City for guys, though let’s hope that Joan takes Peggy shopping for some slightly less frumpy outfits
. It will be interesting to see how as the show progresses, and deals with the 60’s civil rights movements and Vietnam.
